Should I D.I.Y. my home?

We have Bunnings. And Pinterest. What more does it take to renovate a home?

I see potential clients hesitate when it comes to engaging a designer. And I understand that. We’ve all spent more than usual amounts time within the confines of our fences or walls lately. We’ve come to know the niggles of our houses too well, or dream the modifications that will make things better. Sometimes in quite a lot of detail. Do we really need someone else’s ideas?

I’m all for D.I.Y. But engaging a designer for even a small project sheds new light on the situation. I have a client - husband and wife - who spent years arguing over how to modify their driveway to park both cars securely, and still have an appealing entrance to their home. Finally they called a designer. The solution I came up with was something they’d never thought of. They were first shocked, and then delighted.

When I come to a home, or look at a plan, I listen very carefully to what my clients want, where they feel the solutions lie. Then my job is to go away and achieve more for them than they could ever have asked for!
